Prom Is Coming — Let's Get You Glowing
Prom is one of those nights where you want to look absolutely incredible. And a sun-kissed glow makes every dress look better, every photo pop more, and just gives you that extra confidence. But here's the thing — you can't cram a tan into the last two days. That ends in a burn, a peel, or a self-tanner disaster.
Two weeks out is the perfect time to start. Let's build this tan right.
Two Weeks Before Prom
Day 1-2: Prep your skin. Exfoliate your entire body in the shower with a gentle scrub. Focus on knees, elbows, ankles, and any rough patches. Moisturize heavily for these first two days. This creates a smooth, even canvas for your tan to develop on.
Day 3-4: First tanning session. Short and sweet — 15-20 minutes with SPF 30. This is just to wake up your melanin and start the process. Don't push it. If you burn now, your whole timeline is ruined.
Day 5-6: Second session. Same thing — 15-20 minutes. You should notice the very beginning of color. Keep moisturizing every night.
Day 7: Progress check. One week out. You should have a light base tan. Take a photo in natural light so you can track your progress. Also: try on your dress now to see how the tan looks against the fabric.
One Week Before Prom
Day 8-9: Extended session. Now that you have a base, you can go a little longer — 20-30 minutes. SPF 30. You're deepening the color now. Day 10-11: Another session. Same deal. By now, you should have a solid, noticeable tan. Day 12: Assessment day. Try on your dress again. How does the tan look? Is it even? Do you need more color in certain areas? Adjust your final sessions accordingly.
Final Days
Day 13 (day before prom): DO NOT TAN. Seriously. Any redness from a last-minute session will show in your photos. Your tan continues to develop for 24-48 hours after your last session, so the color you see today will deepen slightly by tomorrow. Also: exfoliate lightly in the shower and moisturize well. This preps your skin to look its best.
Day 14 (prom day): Moisturize in the morning. Your tan should be at its deepest. If you want extra glow, use a shimmer lotion (like Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream) on your arms, legs, and collarbone. It catches the light beautifully in photos.
Self-Tanner as Backup
Things happen — maybe it rained all week, maybe you got a little uneven. Self-tanner is your safety net:
Gradual self-tanner (like Jergens Natural Glow or St. Tropez Gradual Tan) can be applied daily starting a week out to build or supplement your natural tan. It's subtle and buildable. Instant self-tanner should only be used as a last resort, and ONLY if you've used the product before and know how it looks on you. Two days before prom, not the night before. Tan drops (like Isle of Paradise or Tan-Luxe) mixed into your moisturizer give a natural boost without the risk of streaks.
Do NOT try a new self-tanner product for the first time the week of prom. Test it at least two weeks before to make sure it doesn't turn orange or streak on your skin.
Dress Color Coordination
Your tan and your dress color should complement each other:
White/ivory dresses: Look incredible with any tan level. Even a light golden glow pops against white. Black dresses: A deeper tan creates gorgeous contrast. Light tans can wash out against black. Red/burgundy: Warm-toned tans look amazing. Avoid going too dark — medium golden is perfect. Blue/navy: Works with every tan level. Cool-toned colors make warm tans pop. Pastels (pink, lavender, mint): Light to medium tan is ideal. Too dark can overwhelm soft colors. Gold/champagne: Match your skin's warm undertone. A golden tan against a gold dress is chef's kiss.
Prom Day Skin Tips
Apply body lotion to prevent ashy-looking skin. Use a highlighting moisturizer on your collarbone, shoulders, and shins for photo-ready glow. Don't forget SPF on exposed areas if your prom is outdoors (pre-prom photos, outdoor venue). Bring blotting papers for your face — you'll be dancing and sweating.
You've been planning your outfit, your hair, your nails. Your tan deserves the same attention. Start two weeks out, build gradually, and you'll walk into prom with a natural, gorgeous glow that makes everything else look even better.

Face Tanning for Prom Photos
Always use SPF 50 on your face, even while body tanning with SPF 30. Avoid sunglasses tan lines by alternating on and off with eyes closed. Check our face tan line prevention guide. Consider gradual face self-tanner products as backup.
The Self-Tanner Test Run
Do a full test run at least two weeks before prom. Color varies dramatically on different skin tones. Application takes practice. Some self-tanners have a distinct DHA smell. Better to discover all this two weeks out. If something goes wrong, our self-tan removal guide has emergency fixes.
Prom Night Photo Tips for Tanned Skin
Subtle body shimmer on collarbone, shoulders, and shins catches light beautifully. Avoid shimmer on forehead, nose, and chest — flash photography creates white hotspots there. Matte or satin foundation finish photographs better than dewy. If you can, take pre-prom photos during golden hour — warm, directional light makes tanned skin look absolutely incredible.
Use our tanning calculator to plan sessions precisely. Take the skin type quiz to match your timeline to your skin type.
The Emergency Prom Tan (One Week Out)
Did not start two weeks ago? Here is the compressed plan that still works:
Day 1: Exfoliate everything. Moisturize heavily. Start gradual self-tanner in the evening — apply one thin coat all over. This is your base layer.
Day 2: If UV is decent, do a 15-20 minute tanning session with SPF 30. In the evening, apply a second coat of gradual self-tanner. The natural tan building underneath plus the self-tanner building on top creates a double-speed approach.
Day 3: Rest day from sun. Moisturize. Third coat of gradual self-tanner in the evening if you want more depth.
Day 4: Another 15-20 minute tanning session if possible. Exfoliate lightly before the session. No self-tanner tonight — let your skin breathe.
Day 5: If you want a final touch-up, one more thin coat of gradual self-tanner. Otherwise, just moisturize heavily.
Day 6 (day before prom): No tanning, no self-tanner. Exfoliate very lightly in the shower. Moisturize. Your color is set — do not mess with it.
Day 7 (prom day): Moisturize, body oil on shoulders and collarbones, and go be gorgeous.
Is this plan as good as two weeks of gradual building? No. But it is significantly better than showing up to prom with no tan at all. The combination of natural UV plus gradual self-tanner creates a surprisingly convincing result in just one week if you are consistent.
Prom Tanning FAQ
Q: What if it rains all two weeks before prom?
A: Switch to gradual self-tanner immediately. Apply every other day for the first week, then every day for the second week. Exfoliate before each application. By prom night, you will have a convincing warm glow that nobody can tell came from a bottle.
Q: Can I use a tanning bed for prom prep?
A: We strongly recommend against it. Tanning beds emit concentrated UV that carries serious health risks. A gradual self-tanner produces better-looking results with zero UV exposure. Read our full tanning bed comparison for why natural sun or self-tanner always wins.
Q: My friend tans faster than me. Am I doing something wrong?
A: No. Different skin types produce melanin at different rates. Your friend may have more active melanocytes or a different Fitzpatrick type than you. Compare your progress to your own starting point, not to anyone else. Your tan at its natural depth is beautiful.
Q: Should I get a spray tan instead?
A: A professional spray tan is a solid option, especially if weather or time prevent natural tanning. But do a trial run first. Book a spray tan 3-4 weeks before prom, wear it for a few days, and see how it looks with your dress. If you love it, book the real one for 2 days before prom.
Post-Prom Tan Maintenance
Prom is done, the photos are incredible, and now you have this gorgeous tan. Here is how to keep it going into summer instead of letting it fade:
Continue your routine. Do not stop tanning just because prom is over. The base tan you built for prom is the foundation of your summer color. Keep tanning 2-3 times per week with SPF 30 and your color will deepen naturally through June and July.
Moisturize every day. Post-prom, many people slack on skincare because the "goal" has been achieved. But your tan only lasts if you maintain your skin. Daily moisturizing keeps tanned cells healthy and slows the natural shedding process that fades your color.
Transition to summer settings. As UV increases from late May into June, adjust your session lengths and SPF accordingly. The UV that was comfortable in May can burn you in June if you do not adapt. Keep using the tanning calculator as conditions change.
The prom tan was just the beginning. With consistent maintenance, that glow carries you through the entire summer. Every session from here on out builds on the work you already did, and your skin is primed and responsive. Enjoy the payoff.
