Skin hydration advantage: On the plus side, humid air keeps your skin surface more hydrated during tanning. Dry desert air pulls moisture from your skin, which can lead to faster drying and less even tanning. Humid air essentially acts as a natural moisturizer for your skin's surface, which can help UV penetrate more evenly and support smoother melanin development.

Comfort and safety: High humidity makes heat exhaustion more likely because your sweat cannot evaporate efficiently (which is how your body cools itself). In humid climates above 80 degrees, keep sessions 10-15 minutes shorter than you would in dry heat at the same temperature. Use a spray bottle with cold water to manually cool your skin since your sweat is not doing the job as effectively.

The bottom line on humidity: it does not significantly change how much you tan, but it changes how your body handles the heat and how your products perform. Adjust your timeline, product strategy, and hydration accordingly.

Hydration Math for Tanning Sessions

Most people underestimate how much water they lose during a tanning session. Here are the numbers:

In moderate heat (80-85 degrees), you lose approximately 500-700 mL of water per hour through sweating and insensible water loss (evaporation through skin). In high heat (90+ degrees), that number climbs to 1-1.5 liters per hour. A 45-minute tanning session in summer heat can cost you nearly a liter of water.

Signs of inadequate hydration during tanning include: dark yellow urine (should be light yellow), dry lips, feeling lightheaded when you stand up, headache developing during or after the session, and your skin feeling unusually tight or dry despite moisturizing. If you notice any of these, move to shade, drink water with electrolytes, and do not resume tanning that day.

A simple rule of thumb: bring 24 ounces of water for every 30 minutes you plan to be in the sun. Having too much water is never a problem. Having too little can ruin your session and your health.
