Can You Tan Through a Window?

Not really. Ordinary glass blocks almost all UVB, the wavelength mainly responsible for building a tan and causing sunburn, so sitting behind a window won't get you meaningfully darker no matter how long you sit there. Glass does let through a good share of UVA, though, which doesn't produce much color but does contribute to skin aging over time.

This is a genuinely useful distinction, not a technicality, because it explains two things people often get confused about: why sunbathing on a windowsill never seems to work, and why drivers sometimes develop more visible sun damage on the side of their face and arm that faces the car window.

UVA vs UVB, and what glass does to each

Sunlight that reaches the ground carries two UV wavelength bands that matter for skin. UVB is shorter-wavelength, higher-energy, and is the main driver of sunburn and the melanin production that builds a visible tan. UVA is longer-wavelength, lower-energy, penetrates deeper into skin, and contributes more to long-term aging — collagen breakdown, fine lines, and DNA damage that adds up over years — without producing much color on its own.

Standard window glass absorbs the large majority of UVB, generally cited around 97 percent or more blocked. UVA passes through glass far more easily — untreated glass typically blocks somewhere around a third to half of UVA, leaving a substantial share to get through.

Why you won't build real color behind glass

Windshields on most cars are made of laminated glass, which includes a plastic interlayer that blocks the vast majority of UVA in addition to UVB, so the front of a car is fairly well protected. Side and rear windows, however, are usually tempered glass without that laminate layer, and block far less UVA — commonly cited estimates put untreated side-window UVA blocking well below what the windshield achieves.
